Holy Spirit Catholic Church

No more elegant or striking example of the Spanish mission style of architecture is to be found in Florida than the Church of the Holy Spirit, now known as the Lake Wales Arts Center (1099 Hesperides Road). Built at the close of the Florida land boom, the building is situated on a large corner lot. Its style is expressed by a gable roof with curvilinear parapet ends, a large central dome, a bell tower, an arched entry, a stucco exterior, and arched windows divided into three sections by spiral columns.

On the occasion of the church's dedication, the local paper commented: The building is a masterpiece of architecture and representative of the best thought of men who are on familiar terms with church and cathedral architecture and construction in the old world. One might easily believe that this interesting structure, with its time stained walls and ancient tower, slipped in from some bygone day and settled down for centuries to come in its new modern surroundings.
