Today, we remember and honor the heroes who fought to protect us and our nation.
Interesting fact – Honoring fallen soldiers dates back to May 1868, three years after the Civil War. The holiday was known as Decoration Day – the start of a tradition where people decorated the graves of soldiers. Congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday in 1971. Each year, it’s commemorated on the last Monday of May at Arlington National Cemetery. During the ceremony, the president or vice president places a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
