The Bullard Building got its start in 1919, when Bernice King Bullard laid down $70,000 for construction of a 2-story brick building. Completed in January 1920, it was hailed as an architectural gem for Lake Wales. In those early years, it housed a drug store, barber shop, post office, meat market, and dry goods store on the first floor, with municipal offices and a bowling alley on the upper floor. The Bullard Building still stands on East Stuart Avenue and retains much of its original beauty.
