Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Celebrates City-Lake Wales Family YMCA Partnership

YMCA Ribbon Cutting 2021

Lake Wales, FL – The City of Lake Wales and the YMCA of West Central Florida held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate renovations made to the Lake Wales Family YMCA facility.

Deputy Mayor Robin Gibson, Commissioner Terrye Howell, City Manager James Slaton, Chief Executive Officer for the YMCA of West Central Florida Dr. Elaine Thompson, Chief Operating Officer for the YMCA of West Central Florida Renee Camper, and YMCA of West Central Florida Board Member Dionne Kohl attended.

The City has worked to renovate the facility since acquisition in early 2020. Improvements completed to date include, repairs to the electrical system, replacement of air conditioning units, replacement of the retaining wall near the childcare area, repaving of the parking lot, new parking lot landscaping, and new facility signage. Additionally, the City has undertaken due diligence work to assess the feasibility of replacing the basketball court roof and the structural integrity of the racquetball courts.

The City will continue its work at the facility by installing additional landscaping; replacing fencing at the pool and around the perimeter of the facility. All renovation projects are anticipated to be complete within the coming months.

Also taking place at the time of the ribbon cutting was the “We Swim Splash Party” hosted by the Lake Wales Family YMCA, Rotary on the Ridge, Lincoln Community Development Corporation and the City of Lake Wales. The event saw 58 people sign up for City sponsored swim lessons. The splash party kicked off the “Learn to Swim” program, a City of Lake wales sponsored program that allows any city resident the opportunity to sign up to learn how to swim for free.

As part of the City’s partnership with the YMCA, City residents can purchase a monthly YMCA membership at a 50% discounted rate. A family membership is $56 per month, for a City resident the fee would be $28 per month. Additionally, any city resident can use the pool at no cost during the following hours: Tuesdays & Thursdays: 11am to 1pm and 4pm to 7pm, Saturdays 10am to 4pm, and Sundays 12pm to 4pm.
